Find the Why! Healthcare Challenges: “Summer Season”
The Context:
The next pandemic has been reported on the news in a foreign country. You have been called into your State Infectious Disease Command Center in downtown Omaha, as part of a special student task force formed to come up with solutions to fortify and level up our state’s response to this potential crisis in the area of:
- HIPAA
- CPR
- infection Control
- Medical Ethics
- Internal and external communication in healthcare.
Session 1: HIPAA
Corresponding Module Completed: Earned Industry Badge
FTW! Challenge: Ensuring HIPAA compliance during a pandemic is crucial to protect patients' privacy and sensitive health information while addressing healthcare needs effectively. Implement simulated exercises to allow staff to practice handling HIPAA-related scenarios in a pandemic context. Incorporate role-playing activities to simulate real-life situations and enhance practical skills.
Session 2: Saving a Life (CPR)
Corresponding Module Completed: Earned Industry Badge
FTW! Challenge: Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a critical life-saving technique used in emergency situations when someone's heartbeat or breathing has stopped. Performing CPR during a pandemic presents several unique challenges due to the heightened risk of viral transmission and the strain on healthcare systems. While traditional CPR involves chest compressions and rescue breaths, explore alternative approaches or modifications that can be considered based on the situation, the rescuer's training level, and available resources. These should focus on minimizing the need for direct contact with the patient and therefore reducing the risk of virus transmission.
Session 3: Infection Control
Corresponding Module Competed: Earned Industry Badge
FTW! Challenge: Healthcare workers are at the frontline of managing patients during a pandemic. Strict infection control protocols protect healthcare workers from getting infected themselves, ensuring that they can continue to provide care to patients without risking their own health. Describe how you would:
- Ensure that front line workers have access to adequate resources, including cleaning supplies, disinfectants, PPE, and equipment necessary to perform their job effectively. Regularly replenish supplies and ensure they have access to the tools they need to maintain cleanliness and safety.
- Foster a supportive work environment that values the contributions of front-line workers in infection control. Recognize their efforts and provide support to address any challenges they may encounter in performing their duties.
Session 4: Medical Ethics
Corresponding Module Competed: Earned Industry Badge
FTW! Challenge: Medical ethics are of paramount importance in healthcare during a pandemic. By adhering to ethical principles, healthcare providers can effectively navigate the complexities of a pandemic while prioritizing the well-being of patients and the community. Create comprehensive ethical guidelines tailored to the specific challenges posed by pandemics. These guidelines should address issues such as resource allocation, triage protocols, privacy concerns, and the protection of vulnerable populations.
Session 5: Communication in Healthcare
Corresponding Module Competed: Earned Industry Badge
FTW! Challenge: Internal and external communication in healthcare during a pandemic is essential for ensuring the safety of healthcare workers, coordinating the response effort, providing support to staff, engaging with the community, and effectively managing the crisis. Transparent and timely communication builds trust, enhances collaboration, and strengthens the overall resilience of the healthcare system in combating the pandemic. Leverage technology platforms such as mobile apps, social media, and telemedicine to disseminate information and provide virtual support to patients and healthcare providers. Develop a user-friendly app that offers real-time updates, symptom tracking tools, and access to telehealth services.
