Sepsis is the leading cause of death in U.S. hospitals. Sepsis is also the leading cause of readmissions to the hospital, with as many as 19% of people originally hospitalized with sepsis, re-hospitalized within 30 days. For these reasons, as well as many others, sepsis prevention, identification, and treatment remain a major healthcare priority. Fortunately, sepsis deaths can be prevented. According to the Sepsis Alliance, as many as 80% of sepsis deaths could be prevented with standardization and mobilization of tools and protocols that are already available.

This learning collaborative has been developed using the newly released Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Hospital Sepsis Program Core Elements.
