2023 ICISF CISM Schedule- Group Crisis Intervention
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Designed to present the core elements of a comprehensive, systematic, and multi-component crisis intervention curriculum, the Group Crisis Intervention course will prepare participants to understand a wide range of crisis intervention services. Fundamentals of Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) will be outlined, and participants will leave with the knowledge and tools to provide several group crisis interventions, specifically demobilizations, defusings and the Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD). The need for appropriate follow-up services and referrals, when necessary, will also be discussed.
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
At the conclusion of this activity, the participants should be better able to:
• Discuss key concepts of crisis and stress including essential interventions to help manage psychological and behavioral reactions.
• Describe how Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) strategies can be incorporated into practice including the elements of debriefing and defusing as derived from case examples during role play
• Discuss how the team shares accountability with other professions to meet standards of practice for population focused problem-solving during difficult situations surrounding traumatic events for more cohesive and effective outcomes.
BECOME A CISM PEER MEMBER
• It is vital that first responders, dispatchers, corrections, emergency management, and hospital personnel have access to mental health resources. Without it, these individuals may run the risk of suicides, post-traumatic stress and leaving their jobs.
• The Statewide CISM team is currently in need of hospital personnel who are willing to donate their time for these brave men and women who have committed their lives to keeping our state healthy and safe!
• The ER staff is bombarded with not only emergencies but holding for hours and sometimes days for admitted patients waiting for a bed. Hospitals have faced all the challenges faced with COVID and now a severe nursing shortage. The Nebraska Office of Emergency Health Systems and UNMC College of Nursing has formed a partnership to address the needs of nurses at the time of crisis.
• The team is made up of volunteer peer support and licensed mental health personnel who have been trained to assist responders in dealing with normal reactions to abnormal events. Communications with the team are voluntary and confidential.
• If you are in the field of nursing or hospital staff and you have a desire to give back to your fellow hospital staff personnel, this course was developed with you in mind. You will learn from experts in the field who have been trained by the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation (ICISF) in techniques such as life cycles of a disaster, proper intervention to assist victims of a disaster, and means of coping with the stress of an event. If you are interested in joining our team as a volunteer, please reach out to Debbie Kuhn, CISM Program Manager at 402-326-0173, or at Debbie.Kuhn@nebraska.gov. You will be guided through the process of volunteering and how to register for a 16-hour course that will prepare you to start down the path of giving back to your fellow peers who need you now, more than ever.
• It is essential to train more hospital personnel for peer support. The volunteer hours are not excessive and trained volunteers can accept or reject requests as they occur.
