Course Curriculum
Presenters from the Joint Commission will provide participants with the latest compliance statistics from over 600 hospital surveys completed nationwide thus far in 2023. The speakers will also discuss new hospital standards and survey process changes on the horizon, as well as new accreditation/certification programs under development. Finally, participants will receive an overview of requirements eliminated as part of the Standards Reduction Initiative.

Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this session, participants should be able to:
• Identify the 10 most challenging Joint Commission standards during the first half of 2023, both by frequency and severity.
• Understand new requirements going into effect in at leastthree3 hospital manual chapters on July 1, 2023, and Jan. 1, 2024.
• Recall three new accreditation and certification programs that have started in 2023 or are under development.
• Discuss at least 10 requirements that have been eliminated as a result of Standards Reduction Initiative.

Speaker Bios:
Chad Larson has worked for The Joint Commission for 17 years and is currently the executive director of the Hospital Program at The Joint Commission. In this role, he builds relationships with health systems, hospitals, and industry stakeholders by leading strategic initiatives that provide value-added services in the acute care market. Prior to his current role, he served as director of business support operations, where he led the administration and management of operational, financial, and planning activities for 11 departments and 120 employees. A 15-year member of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE), Mr. Larson is a certified Lean Six Sigma Green Belt and a certified Facilitating Change Leader. He holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the Keller Graduate School of Business in Chicago with an emphasis in health services administration and a Bachelor of Science (BS) in kinesiology and exercise science from Northern Illinois University.
Mark Crafton is the executive director of strategic alliances for The Joint Commission and oversees all Joint Commission activities related to state government outreach, payer relations, and the development and management of alliances with key external organizations. Before joining The Joint Commission, he was the senior director of advocacy for the Michigan Health & Hospital Association. As senior director, he was responsible for monitoring all legislative and regulatory activity that affected member hospitals and health systems. Mr. Crafton began his career as a medical technologist at Edward W. Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, Michigan, where he worked in a variety of laboratory positions. He has held several other clinical positions, including virology technician and infection control coordinator in acute care hospitals.
Mr. Crafton graduated with honors from Michigan State University where he majored in natural science. He completed a one-year internship in medical technology and became registered as a medical technologist by the American Society of Clinical Pathology. He received his master’s degree in public administration from Western Michigan University and is a certified Lean Six Sigma Green Belt.
